"A door never locked — a light never extinguished — a presence always to be found." The first statement of this description — from the 1929 Meditation Manual and Description pamphlet of the Klise Memorial Chapel — may not hold true nowadays, but the other two certainly are. And in that soft light, as you approach the altar reredos, you do feel the presence of the miracle that is the Nativity, masterfully carved between the Evangelists Matthew and Mark.

Rev. Thomas Davies Clay

Five rewarding years spent as a docent at Washington Cathedral — so much beauty, such incredible sacred art — gave the Rev. Thomas Clay an idea. "After one of my Cathedral tours, I came home one day," he says, "and said to my wife, 'I think I'd like to go to England and visit the cathedrals there.' She nearly fell over, but had the plane reservations that night." After his first European trip, Thomas discovered that, "Building models of the cathedrals I was planning to visit enhanced my experience." He's now surrounded by a gallery of beautiful models — and beautiful memories…

Butte, Montana
Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church
Posted Aug 18, 2011 0 Downloads;
Before frescoes covered the nave, dome, and sanctuary, The Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, Butte, Montana, was filled with the soft light of stained glass. The windows are now framed by Byzantine frescoes of Saints — like St. Symeon the Stylite — that beautifully fill the tall, narrow spaces between the stained glass. The Nativity window, a depiction of the Adoration of the Shepherds, is found on the North wall of the church. The Mother of God presents her Newborn Son to the adoring Shepherds, while Joseph stands under the thatched roof of the manger. An eight-pointed Star of Bethlehem shines above, and higher still, a golden Byzantine Cross is set amidst a field of blue.

Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church

Father Russel Radoicich opens the nave doors of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, Montana, and, his visitors let out a collective gasp: every square inch of the church is filled with Byzantine iconography of the highest order. It took fourteen months, in 2003-2006, for the frescoes to be "written" by a gifted team of six Belgrade icongraphers. It's impossible to convey the scope and beauty of the Holy Trinity iconography on a two-dimensional page — let alone by the small image on the left! — but our thumbnail gives you an idea of the magnificence of the sacred art that fills the church. The Nativity spans almost half of the ceiling over the nave, and is framed by traditional stylized motifs and medallions of Saints and Prophets.

St. George Greek Orthodox Church

In the altar of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, in Vancouver, in the Proskomide Offertory Table — supported by two marble columns, enclosed by glass doors, and adorned by two carved wooden columns that support a semi-circular top filled with elaborate Byzantine floral motifs — is a Byzantine icon of The Nativity. Its gold-leaf background glows in the low light, and the red cover of the Communion Chalice is reflected in the red cloak of the Mother of God who kneels — as is traditional in the Cretan-school style — in front of her Newborn Son. Among the scenes masterfully "written" by iconographer K. Zouvelos, Magi approach on the left, looking and pointing heavenward at the Star, and an angel brings the Good News to a shepherd.

Everywhere you look in Vancouver's St. George Greek Orthodox Church you see beautiful Byzantine iconography: in the richly-carved icon screen with its motifs of the double-headed eagle of Byzantium; the large dome; the walls of the nave; the ceiling filled with Biblical scenes, including The Nativity. In this Cretan-school depiction, the Mother of God is shown kneeling in front of the manger, as all around her unfolds the narrative of the Nativity: angels and shepherds, Magi and gifts, Salome and the Babe's first bath, and Joseph and a shepherd representing an uncomprehending world.

Amidst the solitude of the Vashon Island forest lies the All-Merciful Saviour Russian Orthodox Monastery whose Abbot Tryphon, and his monastic community, welcome pilgrims and visitors. The blue onion dome of the Monastery church is almost hidden amidst the tall pines, and in the sanctuary a green-bordered icon of the Nativity — which, in the Byzantine Cretan tradition depicts The Mother of God kneeling — also depicts a kneeling Josph.

About 24 miles north of the scenic Columbia River Gorge, the St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Monastery is nestled in a pine forest that borders Highway 97. Although the primary monastic vocation is prayer, the nuns also practice traditional monastery arts: making incense, beeswax candles, knotting prayer ropes, making soap and lotions, and offering delicious Greek pastries, honey and jams, and the "writing" of exquisite Byzantine icons. The portable icon of the Nativity, shown at left, is a most tender depiction of The Birth of Christ.

On the North Transept of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Granville, Iowa, the Nativity is depicted in three beautiful stained glass windows. In the larger, center window — dedicated by, "Muetter Verein," (The Mothers Association) — the Child Jesus, his arms outstretched in welcome, sits on an x-shaped manger brimming with wheat stalks. The Blessed Virgin is kneeling and holding her arms protectively around the Child, while Joseph, on one knee, holds his crook. On smaller windows on either side, two adoring shepherds and the ox and the ass look on.

Immaculate Conception Church

The Immaculate Conception Church, Cherokee, Iowa, under the guiding hand of its Pastor, the Very Rev. Armand J. Bertrand, V.F., is undergoing a splendid restoration. The church, built in 1907, is eerily empy, its slender columns half-clad in protective plastic. Although the lights are off, the brand-new, gilded, Corinthian capitals glisten with light streaming in from exquisite stained glass windows depicting the Apostles. High above, in the apse of the altar — newly painted and wonderfully stenciled — are four Gothic stained glass windows. The Nativity, on the extreme right, is reminiscent of the one at Saint John Cantius, in Chicago. The Blessed Virgin is seated at the manger, wrapping her Newborn Son in her white shawl. Joseph, a hand to his chest, stands, under a canopy of rose arches and crenellations. In the center, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove in a field of blue, is depicted in the center of a cross. Father Armand — a photographer himself — has invited me back in September, to photograph when the restoration is finished. I can hardly wait.

When Pope Nicolas IV had the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore rebuilt in the 13th century, he commissioned Brother Jacopo Torriti to adorn it with mosaics. The Coronation of the Virgin takes center stage, and below, between four pointed arches, second from right, is The Adoration of the Magi. The Star of Bethlehem has come to rest above the Christ Child, held in the embace of an enthroned Mother of God, while an angel guides the Wise Men.

In the 13th century apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, just below the 13th century Coronation of the Virgin, five golden mosaics fill the spaces between the pointed arches. The Nativity — second from left, between the Annunciation and the Falling Asleep of Mary — depicts the Mother of God reclining in a traditional cave, holding the swaddled Child in front of a splendid, classical-temple-like, manger.

To the left of the altar, above the Proskomidé (Offertory) table hangs a Byzantine icon of The Nativity by iconographer D. Dukas, dated 1968. The Blessed Virgin's dark blue mantle — that of a Byzantine empress — denotes devotion and glorification of the Mother of God, since the color blue, in Medieval times, was obtained from lapis lazuli, that valued more than gold.

In the Adoration of The Magi, the Kings of the East — turbaned, crowned, and clad in royal purple, damask, and gold — are depicted on the right side of a two-light window. This small Nativity icon depicts the Mother of God in adoration, her Newborn Child reclining on a bright red manger.
