Measuring just 3.5 x 2.75 x .75 inches, the Agave Miniature Nativity adds a different setting to our miniature nativities collection. That leafy agave plant, that double stone arch, those curlicued carved columns, all that ivy! It's a palatial setting for the Nativity, which unfolds below a bright Star of Bethlehem which has come to rest on the roof. Aware that paper stars are especially fragile, this five-pointed one is attached to the front by a paper band. So that, if a mishap happens, all you need do is turn on your printer.

At first glance it seems as though you're seeing double. Don't Baroque Miniature Nativities 1 & 2 look almost identical? Both are set in the same elaborate Baroque proscenium festooned with red fabric and decorated with urns, scrolls, and angels. And both Nativity scnenes unfold under a myriad stars. But that's where the similarities end. The differences? In the Star of Bethlehem; the Adoration of the Magi and the Adoration of the Shepherds; in the Christmas message that appears in fancy script in the scroll of the front, "Gloria," and "Peace;" and in the mirror image of the proscenium in Nativity 2, which adds yet another variation to this Baroque extravaganza. I love seeing them hanging by a gold cord from my Miniature Crèche Tree. But if you wish to display them, instead, you may do so, by attaching a small tab to the wrong side of the front that acts as a stand.

Ten letter-sized sheets feature the wonderful scenes that make up the eight layers of this fold-out Byzantine paper nativity. Joseph, pensive, is in the second plane, with the Babe's First Bath in the third, followed by a Piper playing a tune in the fourth. The Magi and an Angel giving the Good News to a Shepherd are featured in the fifth plane, with the Morther and Child, the Angels and the Star in the sixth and seventh. The previous scenes are set against a golden background — the eighth layer — emblazoned with "The Birth of Christ," in Greek. This special nativity is adapted from the Gospel of Nikephoros Phokas in the collection of the Great Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece.

The fold-out construction allows even the front fence layer with a Magi and a shepherd to open, creating a marvelous 3D effect. The second layer, the Front, features a tiled roof and the ox and the ass peeking out from a manger window. The third, Magi, layer depicts two resplended Kings of the East, and the fourth the Mother and Child, Joseph, and an adoring shepherd.
