 Friend, there is a welcome in this Church for Thee. Come in and Rest and Think and Kneel and Pray. What men have builded for God’s Glory, See. Give Thanks, and so in Peace go on Thy way. — Shrewsbury Abbey, England

I can't think of a more appropriate introduction to the Crèchemania Nativity Guide than this inscription from Shrewsbury Abbey.

In Search of The Nativity, I have been inspired by art of rare beauty; experienced transcendent moments of contemplation; and have been met with much kindness — dedicated priests, bishops, monsignors, nuns, monks, brothers, seminarians, custodians, sacristans, and church parishioners — have welcomed, and shared with me their church's treasured sacred art.

Enter a church, a monastery, convent, museum — and experience for yourself the awesome inspiration of sacred art…

The United States was just 21-years-old when Saint Mary's was built in 1797 at 10 Lodge Street, in the heart of Albany, New York. Its history and beautiful architecture — the glorious curved ceiling supported on graceful arches and the Byzantine icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help alone are worth a visit. Saint Mary's is also adorned by a tall, narrow stained glass window with The Annunciation on the left, and the Nativity on the right (shown on the right column, top).

The Adoration of The Magi stained glass window
Posted Jun 14, 2011 0 Downloads;
Alton, Iowa (population 1,095) is home to St. Mary's Catholic Church which is adorned with 2,300 feet of magnificent Munich stained glass. In the Adoration of The Magi, the Kings of the East — turbaned, crowned, and clad in royal purple, damask, and gold — are depicted on the right side of a two-light window. On the left, The Newborn Child, held in the embrace of the Blessed Virgin, leans towards the Wise Men with open arms — an endearing depiction of Christ allegorically embracing the world. St. Mary's stands as a testament of the faith of the Luxemburg Catholics who founded this beautiful church in 1870.

Housed in a 1848 grand mansion of the Duchess of Placentia, The Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum includes in its collections art from the 4th to the 19th centuries. This small Nativity icon depicts the Mother of God in adoration, her Newborn Child reclining on a bright red manger. The ox and the ass are housed under a tiny straw roof, a shepherd plays his pipe, Joseph sits pensively, and angels, all around, announce the Good News. Western in its execution, its unpainted background makes one wonder if once it had not been adorned with gold or silver. Read more...

St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church
The Nativity of Christ Byzantine Icon
Posted Feb 6, 2011 0 Downloads;
The St. John Chrysostom Melkite Catholic Church is housed in the neo-classical marble mansion of Asa Chandler — of Coca Cola fame — at 1428 Ponce de Leon Avenue, in the Druid Hills Section of Atlanta. The mansion-to-church transformation has been miraculous, and the former grand dining room now serves as the church sanctuary, its curved stained glass ceiling flooding with natural light the Byzantine icons that line the walls. The Nativity, by New York Greek-American noted iconographer C. Yousssis, is "written" in the Cretan Traditon, with the Virgin kneeling in front of the Christ Child, instead of reclining.

Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church

Father Russel Radoicich opens the nave doors of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, Montana, and, his visitors let out a collective gasp: every square inch of the church is filled with Byzantine iconography of the highest order. It took fourteen months, in 2003-2006, for the frescoes to be "written" by a gifted team of six Belgrade icongraphers. It's impossible to convey the scope and beauty of the Holy Trinity iconography on a two-dimensional page — let alone by the small image on the left! — but our thumbnail gives you an idea of the magnificence of the sacred art that fills the church. The Nativity spans almost half of the ceiling over the nave, and is framed by traditional stylized motifs and medallions of Saints and Prophets.

Before frescoes covered the nave, dome, and sanctuary, The Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, Butte, Montana, was filled with the soft light of stained glass. The windows are now framed by Byzantine frescoes of Saints — like St. Symeon the Stylite — that beautifully fill the tall, narrow spaces between the stained glass. The Nativity window, a depiction of the Adoration of the Shepherds, is found on the North wall of the church. The Mother of God presents her Newborn Son to the adoring Shepherds, while Joseph stands under the thatched roof of the manger. An eight-pointed Star of Bethlehem shines above, and higher still, a golden Byzantine Cross is set amidst a field of blue.

Immaculate Conception Church
Posted Jul 16, 2011 0 Downloads;
The Immaculate Conception Church, Cherokee, Iowa, under the guiding hand of its Pastor, the Very Rev. Armand J. Bertrand, V.F., is undergoing a splendid restoration. The church, built in 1907, is eerily empy, its slender columns half-clad in protective plastic. Although the lights are off, the brand-new, gilded, Corinthian capitals glisten with light streaming in from exquisite stained glass windows depicting the Apostles. High above, in the apse of the altar — newly painted and wonderfully stenciled — are four Gothic stained glass windows. The Nativity, on the extreme right, is reminiscent of the one at Saint John Cantius, in Chicago. The Blessed Virgin is seated at the manger, wrapping her Newborn Son in her white shawl. Joseph, a hand to his chest, stands, under a canopy of rose arches and crenellations. In the center, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove in a field of blue, is depicted in the center of a cross. Father Armand — a photographer himself — has invited me back in September, to photograph when the restoration is finished. I can hardly wait.

This early 19th century icon in Renaissance style may once have graced the second, Festive Tier, of an Orthodox church icon screen. The Star of Bethlehem shines above, a choir of angels holds a Слава в вышних Богу и на земли мир (Gloria in Excelsis Deo) scroll, and two crowned Kings of the East bend their knees in adoration. A third king, in gold robes and white long beard, places his crown — his gift of gold, symbolizing the Kingdom of Christ — on the ground, along side a box with frankincense — symbol of Divinity — and myrrh, symbolizing Christ's Passion. To the left of the altar, above the Proskomidé (Offertory) table hangs a Byzantine icon of The Nativity by iconographer D. Dukas, dated 1968. The Blessed Virgin's dark blue mantle — that of a Byzantine empress — denotes devotion and glorification of the Mother of God, since the color blue, in Medieval times, was obtained from lapis lazuli, that valued more than gold.

In the apse of the altar, the Lord God is enthroned in heavenly coulds and surrounded by light. The ceiling, a work of art in itself, is in raised and painted ornamental plaster called rigalico; and the Angelus, in Latin, encircles the name in large Roman letters. With all this beautiful sacred art, who could blame you for hurrying through the narrow vestibule? The history of this Episcopal Cathedral on Amsterdam Avenue at West 112th Street in Manhattan is as fascinating as its sacred art. It was begun in 1892, and it has been a work-in-progress ever since. When completed, it is said it will be the largest cathedral in the world, based on its fooprint. No matter its massive size, the Cathedral feels amazingly intimate, given its many chapels, architectural details, and beautiful artwork. The Cathedral Pulpit, designed by Henry Vaughn, is a case in point, embellished as it is with intricate carved Biblical scenes. But the monochromatic altar does not suffer by comparison: richly carved, it features the Four Evangelists on either side of a large central relief of The Transfiguration. The Adoration of the Magi relief

When, almost 150 years ago, Archbishop John Hughes proposed a location for a new church so far outside the city, they called St. Patrick's Cathedral "Hughes folly." But Archbishop Hughes had vision, and faith, and St. Patrick's Cathedral — a decorated Neo-Gothic church — rose while the country was plunged into Civil War. and over the years adorned with beautiful sacred art. The North Transept, site of the Cathedral's baptismal font, features a crenelated marble altar crowned by pinnacles. Two angels holding banners stand at either end, and, in the center, a relief of Virgin holding the Christ Child, while a young John the Baptist — in a hide dress — holds the Cross. On the left of this larger central scene there's a relief of The Annunciation, and on the right, The Adoration of the Magi. Framed by slender polychrome columns that support an elongated openwork gable pierced by a trifoil, The three Wise Men offer their gifts, kneeling and standing in front on the Enthroned Virgin holding the Christ Child.

This American Episcopal Church is designated a National Monument by the Italian Government because of its art, which includes a painting of The Adoration of the Magi and Shepherds high on the walls. It's framed by four Gothic arches and separated by three sets of double twisted columns, under GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO ET IN TERRA PAX carved in the stone.

Gold-leafed Byzantine icons on the side walls of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Sacramento are lit not just by golden oil lamps hanging above, but illuminated by stained glass windows. That of The Nativity is the third window to the left of the altar screen, set between the stained glass windows of The Presentation and the visitation. Its deep colors — reds, golds, blues, greens — highlight the Christ Child Who is depicted cradled in the arms of the Virgin. St. Joseph, palms raised, stands by the manger, a curled-up ass and standing ox by his side. A shepherd adores, and, above, the Star of Bethlehem sheds its bright rays.

Across the street from the state capitol of California stands the historic 1887 Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, built by Patrick Manogue, the first bishop of Sacramento, who patterned his church after Paris' Église de la Sainte-Trinité (The Church of the Holy Trinity). The Cathedral's Victorian interior is beautifully adorned with paintings and stained glass, and The Nativity is at the left of the three apse stained glass windows, with The Last Supper at the center and The Transfiguration at far right.

Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation
Posted Feb 24, 2011 0 Downloads;
As I enter the Bishop Anthony Chapel of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation during Sunday morning Liturgy, I expect it to be filled with Byzantine chant, faithful, and incense. But it is also filled with light — flooding in from the dome and two gloriously lit stained glass windows of the The Crucificion and The Resurrection, set into the east wall. Precious relics of the old Cathedral, which was demolished after the 1989 earthquake, they include, on the west wall — could it be? — a window of The Nativity. It's a special moment, the first time I see the words, "Dóxa En Ypsístois Theó," (Glory to God in the Highest), and, "I Christoú Génnisis," (The Nativity of Christ), in stained glass. But I have to really look to discern the Greek letters, because this window (and that of the Baptism of Christ) is set into the wall separating the chapel from the Bishop Anthony Hall. The fluorescent bulbs meant to illuminate the stained glass are no match for the natural light flooding the chapel, and I know I will have to return after dark to capture its beauty.

This Birth of Christ icon is "written"—icons are not said to be painted—in the "Renaissance" style. Its folk art quality is not the only artistic difference from a Byzantine icon of The Nativity: missing are the Magi, the angels, and the multiple events—the washing of the Babe, the tempting of Joseph—found in traditional Byzantine iconography. Nevertheless, this icon from my home town church is a most endearing one to me and the Holy Trinity faithful. Read more...

The second, Joyful Tier, of the iconostasis (the icon screen that separates the altar from the nave) of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church was adorned with icons in the Renaissance style. But the fire that destroyed most of the iconostasis sparred only five, including The Nativity, which now hangs in the choir loft of the church I attended as a child. In the cave of The Nativity, the Mother of God presents the Newborn Child to the adoring shepherds while the Star of Bethlehem blazes in the night sky.

Portable Byzantine icons adorn the curved wall of the altar of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, my home parish while growing up in Sioux City, Iowa. This Nativity, shown at left, is in marked contrast with the Renaissance-style depiction from the old icon stand, and the folk-art portable icon (see images above): the Byzantine iconographic canon is evident in the depiction of the Reclining Mother of God, the Tempting of Joseph, the Bathing of the Newborn, the Approaching Magi, and the Announcing of the Good News to the Shepherds by an Angel.

St. Petersburg's most visible landmark, in The Peter and Paul Fortress, includes The Nativity among its treasured icons

In the middle of St. Petersburg's Peter and Paul Fortress, surrounded by the River Neva, stands the impressive Russian Orthodox Peter and Paul Cathedral. It's onion-shaped dome is dwarfed by its golden spire that rises over 400 feet and is visible from just about anywhere of Peter the Great's capital City. You walk under an immense double-headed eagle of the Romanov's and enter the fortress, expecting ramparts and canons. But what you also see, when you enter the Cathedral, is gold that dazzles the eyes, ebellishing just about every surface: column capitals; wrought iron railings; crystal chandeliers; ceiling reliefs and ornaments; and, most of all, covering the indescribably beautiful icon Baroque icon stand. It rises so high that its top-most cupola — bearing an icon of The Resurrection and a gold-relief of The Holy Trinity — disappears into the dome, and it is set with priceless Byzantine icons. To the right of the center Royal Gate, just above the icon of Christ Enthroned, framed in an oval, is The Nativity. This small thumbnail image at left cannot possibly do justice to the iconography of this cathedral, but I couldn't resist giving you a taste until I can do a fuller treatment.

The Vatican lists no title for Giovanni di Paolo's 15th century tempera-on-panel Nativity, but the three riders approaching through the hillside (not shown in this detail) could very well title this painting The Adoration of the Magi. Bartolomeo Di Tommaso 15th century Nativity
Posted Jun 4, 2011 0 Downloads;
This large painting is set in three Gothic arches, and topped with three tear-drop-shaped crowns embellished with elaborate leaf carving. On the bottom of the gilded frame, in black capital letters, is the name Bartolomeo Di Tommaso, the foremost Umbrian artist at the beginning of the 15th century. And below, in red letters, the name of his painting: La Nativita Di Cristo-L' Incoronazione-L'Adorazione Dei Magi-L' Annunciazione (The Nativity, The Coronation of the Virgin, The Adoration of the Magi, The Annunciation). The angel of The Annunciation crowns the panel of The Nativity, at left, and the Virgin the panel of The Adoration of the Magi. The largest, center panel, of The Coronation of the Virgin, is topped by a sunburst with and the letters IHS. The Nativity, The Coronation of the Virgin, and The Adoration of the Magi are separated by thin, golden, twisted columns and are also topped with elaborate leaf carving. In The Nativity (shown at left) a stone arch separates The Birth of Christ from the world, represented by a shepherd receiving the Good News from an angel, while another plays his pipes. A wicker fence encloses their sheep, and below, the manger. A pensive Joseph half kneels, and the Virgin reclines, attentive at her Newborn Son's seeming reluctance for His first bath: His feet seem firmly planted on the rim of the wooden basin.
