This special nativity is adapted from the Gospel of Nikephoros Phokas in the collection of the Great Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece.

Could that be Mary Magdalen standing at right, and an Apostle at left, clasped hands held to his chest? In the background, at left, are seen the walls of Jerusalem, and at right, on Golgotha, Jesus' Cross and those of the two thieves. And in the foreground stands the Mother of Jesus, wrapped in a blue cloak, hands raised in despair.
