Magi, shepherds, and Prophets mingle in this depiction of The Nativity

The Nativity unfolds against a gold leaf, arched background in this new icon inspired by Byzantine iconography. (Orpheus Gallery, Monastiraki, Athens.

The Virgin rests under a tree, and the Prophet Isaiah proclaims a prophecy—detail of The Nativity, Orpheys Gallery, Monastiraki, Athens.
The cave of The Nativity touches the heavens, and angels trumpet the Good News of Christ's Birth in this semi-circular modern icon based on Byzantine originals.

Other angels hover in the clouds, above, announcing "Glory to God in The Highest, and on Earth Peace, Good Will Towards Men."

Mary and Joseph kneel in front of the Babe bound in swaddling clothes, and on rocky cliffs, Kings—David, Solomon—and Prophets—Malachi,Isaiah—proclaim the Coming of the Lord:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Other scenesdepict the Virgin at rest—presumably on the way to Bethlehem—shown to the left of The Nativity, and The Flight Into Egypt, at bottom right, with a touching depiction of Baby Jesus on Joseph's shoulders.

This latter image—and the icon's rendering—lends a folk-art feel to the icon of the Nativity.
