Tortoise-Shell Lyre Angel
Die-cut, gold-stamped, double-sided, heavy cardboard hanging ornament with gold string

An angel with flowing hair and costume is playing the lyre.
Orpheus soothing the savage beasts — real or imagined — with a lyre.
Featuring feathery wings and flowing garments, this 7.5-inch-high, double-sided, gold-embossed ornament will add a festive touch to your Christmas tree, garland, or holiday decor.

Perhaps it might even inspire you to listen to harp music as you're decorating. If so, perhaps that most famous harp player of all, Orpheus, will come to mind.
The harp of ourTortoise-Shell Lyre Angelis patterned on that given to Orpheus by his father, the sun god Apollo.

The harp, it is said, was invented by the messenger of the gods, Hermes, who joined a tortoise shell with two antelope horns.

Orpheus' music cast a spell on all who listened, soothing even the savage beasts (mosaic, at left). It doesn't really matter that Orpheus is not playing a lyre at all — courtesy of the mosaic artist — but a viol.

The classical Greek tortoise-shell lyre had seven strings, but our angel is playing on eight — a discrepancy, no doubt, due to artistic license.
