Byzantine Crèche
Inspired by a priceless icon from Mount Athos, Greece

A priceless icon of The Nativity from Mount Athos, Greece, becomes a beautiful fold-out free-download crèche

A border of vines frames The Nativity, from the priceless Gospel of Nikephoros Phokas, Monastery of Great Lavra, Mount Athos, Greece.

Ever since I can remember, growing up in Greece, icons were a part of my life.

As were been paper nativities, present my father, a poor olive farmer, could afford.

So it was with great pleasure that I began adapting this Byzantine icon of The Nativity — from the Gospel of Emperor Nikephoros Phokas in the Great Lavra Mt. Athos Monastery — into a fold-out crèche.

The Mother of God — clad in royal purple — reclines in front of a cave, and the newborn Child, in swaddling cloths, rests on a stone manger.

A beam of light, coming from heaven, pierces the darkness, guiding the approaching Magi.

An angel is showing a shepherd the light of the star, while four other angels are shown above the cave of the Nativity.

Joseph sits pensively in wonder of the unfolding miracle, and two handmaidens are giving the Child its first bath.

A shepherd, seemingly unaware, is playing his flute, and the ox and ass draw close to the Child.

It's easy to print, cut-out, and assemble the Byzantine Crèche with the step-by-step instructions included in our PDF Download.
