A Christmas triptych's golden glow

Rating: 5 votes, 4.40 average.
At 30.5 x 20 inches, this large backlit crèche fills the room with a golden glow.
A much smaller backlit crèche, lit with a battery-powered flickering candle.
It measures 20 inches high and 30.5 inches wide, and it fills the room with its golden glow, the closest thing to a beautiful, sun-lit, stained glass window in the gray Midwest winter days.

How this large, fragile — the image is cigarette-paper thin — survived intact is a mystery.

But here it was, an Oblaten Pappe Hinter Licht Krippe Aufsteller um 1900 — antique large wafers cardboard backlight crib set up around 1900 —in this large cardboard box, en route from Germany, ready to transform any lamp into a wondrous illumination.

The central, larger, panel depicts the Nativity, with shepherds and magi adoring in the adjoining smaller ones. Fragments of biblical verses, from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew in flowing calligraphic script, appear at the bottom of each panel:

Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Matthew 2:2.

And the angel said to them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people. Luke 2:10.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

May the glow of Christmas fill your home — and your heart.

With best wishes,

P.S. I must share with you a beautiful new Christmas carol by Alexander L'Estrange, offered free on the website of the BBC Music Magazine.

Christina Rosetti's 1895 lyrics that capture the true meaning of Christmas, have been set to beautiful music by Alexander L'Estrange:

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.
